Who is eligible to apply?
A Certificate of Graduate Studies is a non-degree credential designed to
provide students with specialized knowledge that is less extensive than a
masters program. In the preferred model, students are enrolled in both a
graduate degree program (masters or doctoral) and a certificate program;
the academic experience is, therefore, interdisciplinary by nature. Two
separate application forms plus credentials are submitted to the Graduate
School and admission to one does not guarantee admission to the other. In
the case of the Complex Systems Graduate Certificate program, the
certificate program is also free standing. Students who have received a
post-baccalaureate degree within the previous five years may apply to the
Graduate School for admission to the certificate program only.

What is the deadline for applications?
There is no official deadline. Applications are taken for the Certificate
Program throughout the year. Keep in mind: There may be delays in
application review during the Spring/Summer months when the review
committee is away.

I'd like to register for a course for one term
without enrolling in a degree program. What do I do?
In order to register for courses, you must have a University of Michigan
affiliation. Go to the Rackham Website and download Rackham's form for
Unclassified Students, Non-Candidate for Degree. If you have
questions, contact Rackham
Graduate Admissions, tel. (734)-647-8017.

I've just been accepted to a graduate program at the
University of Michigan. Now, I'd like to apply to the Complex
Systems Graduate Certificate Program. What's the process?
First, do NOT pay another fee to Rackham. If you'd like to make your
Certificate application prior to or during your first term at the U-M,
download Rackham's
Application for Admissions. If you have questions, contact
Rackham Graduate
Admissions, tel. (734)-764-8129.
Second, the Complex Systems Center will need photocopies of the following
items from your admissions file:
- GRE or equivalent test scores
- Non-UM transcript(s)
- Letters of recommendation
- Submit a written statement of purpose
Departments need clearance from the student or applicant in order to
provide copies of these materials. Often, an e-mail request will do. We
have posted a simple form that you may use, also.
Please ask the department to send the materials to:
Graduate Admissions
Complex Systems Center
4485 Randall Lab
Campus Zip 1120
If the Student Services liaison for the department has questions, he or
she may feel free to contact the Graduate Coordinator at
(734)-763-3301.

I'm an active student in a Rackham graduate
program at the University of Michigan. Now, I'd like to apply to the
Complex Systems Graduate Certificate Program.
What's the process?
First, do NOT complete the Rackham Admissions application. This is not
necessary, since you are already enrolled in a Rackham graduate program If
you'd like to make your Certificate application after your first term at
the U-M, download
Rackham's
Application for Readmission, Change of Program (Includes Change of Degree
Level) or Dual Degree form. If you have questions, contact
Rackham Graduate Admissions,
tel. (734)-764-8129.

How long does it take to hear back about
admission to the Certificate Program?
Normally, the process takes only a few weeks, after the admissions file is
complete. There may be delays in the Spring/Summer terms when the
Admissions Committee may not be on campus, though. Also, the process can
be delayed if the file is incomplete.

Does the Center offer funding for students?
Unfortunately, the Center does not offer funding to students, at present.

I've completed my certificate requirements. How do
I apply for graduation?
It's a very simple process. Stop by the Complex Systems office for a
degree/diploma application (commonly known as the "blue card"). Complete
both sides of the card, and turn them into the office for routing to
Rackham's OARD.
If you have received a Rackham Master's degree, then you must also
complete Rackham's
Dual Degree Course Elections form. This form must receive approval
from your home department prior to coming to the Complex Systems Center
for review and approval. If you get "stuck" while completing the form,
contact Julia Thiel, our Records
Specialist at Rackham. She is terrific and will meet with you if you have
any trouble completing the form. Her phone number is 647-4557.
Click
here for Rackham's application deadlines. You will need to follow
these deadlines if you would like your name to appear in the Commencement
Program.
