Seeking POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (or Advanced M.S. Research Analyst)to MODEL HYDROLOGIC INFLUENCES ON THE ECOLOGY OF FLOODPLAINS AND RIVER NETWORKS
Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, Athens, GA (for PostDoc) or Eco-metrics, Inc., Atlanta, GA (for Advanced Research Analyst)

NOTE: Applicants with an M.S. must have extensive post-graduate research experience and an ongoing record of scholarly publication.

DURATION: 1 year, with extension dependent upon funding.

DUTIES: A Postdoctoral Research Associate (or M.S.-level Advanced Research Analyst) with expertise in hydrologic & hydrogeologic modeling and spatial applications in ecology will participate in ongoing research on the hydrology and biogeochemistry of fluvial landscapes (e.g., floodplains and river networks). Duties include development and application of GIS and modeling techniques to: 1) investigate the influence of excess fine sediments on the magnitude and patterns of ground water and surface water interactions in alluvial rivers, and 2) collaborating with colleagues to understand resulting implications for the uptake, storage, and remineralization of riverborne nitrogen by biota inhabiting the streambed and hyporheic zone.

Applications are being taken for a postdoc position in the CASOS group at Carnegie Mellon in the area of social networks and link analysis. The PostDoc will work with Dr. Carley in examining issues related to one or more of these topics: network evolution, cultural effects on networks, designing metrics to assess roles in networks, and evaluation of networks under uncertainty. Applicants should have strong mathematical or statistical skills. The ability to program in Java or C++ is desirable, but not a pre-requisite. Starting dates are by arrangement but ordinarily we would expect successful applicants to begin early in 2007.

The Santa Fe Institute (SFI) anticipates offering serveral Postdoctoral Fellowships to begin in September 2007.
The Postdoctoral Fellowship program provides up to three years of support for independent research at SFI. Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to engage research question of their own design, and to form collaborations with members of the faculty, other SFI postdocs, and researchers from around the world. Fellows pursue research that lies at the boundaries of the traditional disciplines, and that creates new fields of inquiry.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity at the University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota announces a new Postdoctoral Fellowship Program to attract scholars (US citizens or permanent residents) with potential to pursue future faculty positions at the University of Minnesota and at other top research universities. Promising scholars from all disciplines with research interests in one or more of the following priorities should apply: (1) scholarship that contributes to the understanding of diversity in its multiple forms; (2) strong interest in interdisciplinary research and scholarship or creative work; and (3) engagement in partnerships with communities outside of the academy. Fellows will be mentored by the University?s senior faculty to establish an independent research agenda and will participate in professional development seminars to build intellectual community to prepare fellows for tenure-track academic positions. In addition to conducting research, fellows will teach at least one course per year. For the 2007-2008 academic year up to three fellowships will be awarded for a minimum duration of one year beginning in September 2007. Awards may be renewable for a second year based on performance. Although stipend amounts will vary by discipline, fellows will receive a minimum annual stipend of $40,000.

Doctoral Position in Multi-Agent Modeling

The Complex Systems Laboratory, Department of Geography,University of Montreal is seeking doctoral candidates to work on a project in multi-agent modelling. The project involves the development of a multi-agent model of the spatiotemporal movement of marine traffic and marine mammals in the St. Lawrence estuary that can be used as a decision support system to explore the effects of different zoning scenarios on this unique ecosystem. The project is part of an NSERC strategic project and will be undertaken in close collaboration with non-university partners: Parks Canada, Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans and the GREMM (Groupe de recherche et d??duation en mammif?res marins) as well as 3 university partners: Danielle Marceau, Geomatics Engineering, University of Calgary; Jacques-Andr? Landry, Production Automatis?e, ?cole de Technologie Sup?rieure and Lael Parrott, Geography, University of Montreal. The doctoral candidate?s project will involve modelling the activities (behaviour and spatiotemporal movement) of marine mammals in the estuary. The project will be undertaken under the co- supervision of Lael Parrott (Montreal) and Danielle Marceau (Calgary). The candidate must have a master?s degree in geography, environmental science, biology or a related field and have experience in programming and/or modelling.
A bursary of $19,000 for 3 years (starting in January 2007) is available for the successful candidate.
