Part-Time Computer Lab System Administration Position at CSCS

The Center for the Study of Complex Systems (CSCS) is looking for
someone to fill a part-time system administration position in our
computer lab.  Our lab consists of over 40 single and dual 
processor machines/servers running Linux, a number of windows
workstations, servers and laptops, a few Mac OSX machines,
and various printers and other peripheral devices.

The tasks to be done include (but are not limited to)
the typical system administration related tasks:
 - add and remove user logins, and help users with system
   related problems (restore files, etc).
 - help users with various problems that may arise
   (printer connectivity, mail problems, configuring
   various Windows/Linux products, etc.)
 - maintain and monitor the status of the disk systems,
   system backups, usage logs, http logs, etc.
 - various security related tasks, e.g., watch logs,
   run tests, install patches and new security programs.
 - maintain network accessibility, including managing the mixed
   unix and windows machines on a network using Samba.
 - install new versions of software (java products, ide's,
   modeling packages, math packages, etc)
 - help make purchasing decisions, for new hardware
   (machines, printers, disks) and software.
 - troubleshoot problems (software or hardware)
 - install new hardware (disks, ram, peripherals)
This position will also include installing and testing various
more specialized software that is used for the study
of complex systems, e.g., cellular automata, evolutionary algorithms,
neural networks, nonlinear time-series analysis, etc.

The ideal candidate will have experience in all these areas, including
 - Linux (RedHat) administration
 - Windows administration
 - Mac OSX administration
 - C, perl, and other commonly used unix tools
 - Webserver (including pmWiki/wikipedia/swiki) maintenance
 - familiarity with sendmail,bind,NIS/NFS,autofs
Near ideal candidates will have some subset of these skills, along
with a strong desire, willingness and ability to learn quickly.  We
are especially interested in applicants who are self-motivated and
able to use available resources (online information, other sysadmins,
etc) to find solutions and solve problems.

The payrate will start in the $12-15/hour range (depending on prior
experience).  The position involves working 10-15 hours per week.
It is possible to increase hours during the summer term.

Preference will be given to candidates who plan to be at UM 
more than 1 year from now.

Preference is also given to students who qualify for Work Study,
at least during the Fall/Winter terms.

Depending on interest and skills, opportunities also may exist for
pursuing research in complex systems as part of this position.
