Sources of Information and Software for EC Books ----- Angeline, Peter J. and Kinnear, K. (eds) Advances in Genetic Programming 2. (1996) Good articles on state of the art as of 1995. Banzhaf, Wolfgang etal. Genetic Programming: An Introduction. (1998). An excellent recent introduction, with some good chapters on advanced topics as well. Davis, L. Genetic Algorithms and Simulated Annealing. (1987) Handbook of Genetic Algorithms. (1991) Nice applications oriented book. Fogel, D. Evolutionary Computation: Towards a New Philosophy of Machine Intelligence. (1995) EC from the EP perspective. Good summary of history of EC. Goldberg, D. E. Genetic Algorithms in Search, Optimization and Machine Learning. (1989) Good introductory textbook for GA's. (But getting out of date.) Holland, J. H. Adaption in Natural and Artificial Systems. (1975; 2nd ed. 1992) The original Schema Theorem and Michigan view of GAs. Kinnear, K. (ed). Advances in Genetic Programming. (1994) Good articles on state of the art as of 1993. Koza, J. Genetic Programming. (I in 1992, II in 1994, III out soon). The classics for GP. Very big, but don't be discouraged. Mitchell, Melanie. An Introductin to Genetic Algorithms. (1996) A good book, part textbook and part review of some of the more interesting GA research. Michalewicz, Z. Genetic Algorithms + Data Structures = Evolution Programs. (1992, 2nd ed. 1994) Good textbook introduction to using EC for Operations Research type problems (e.g., constrained optimization). Schwefel, H.-P. Evolution and Optimum Seeking. (1995) The ES view. Conference Proceedings ---------------------- These are very good places to get a feel for the breadth of the area, by scanning the table of contents and abstracts. (Unfortunately, the UM libraries do not have them all.) ICGA: Internat. Conf. on Genetic Algorithms. Bi-annual since 1985. Called GECCO in 1999 (july). PPSN: Parallel Problem Solving from Nature Bi-annual since 1990. EP: Evolutionary Programming Annual since 1990. ECAL: European Conference of Artificial Life. FOGA: Foundations of Genetic Algorithms Bi-annual since 1990. IEEE Conference on Evolutionary Computation GP96: Genetic Programming 1996: Proceedings of First conference. SAB: Simulated Adaptive Behavior Bi-annual since 1990. Note that there are others conferences in which EC papers appear, e.g., neural net related, machine learning, AAII conferences and workshops, etc. Journals -------- Evolutionary Computation. Trying to cover all of EC. Biological Cybernetics. Home to many EP papers. IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation. Home to many EP papers, but really trying to cover all of EC. Simulated Adaptive Behavior. Complex Systems. Complexity. (Brand new.) Artificial Life. Machine Learning. Annals of Mathematics and AI. and other AI and artificial neural net related journals; and of course papers in Op. Research and other "application specific" journals (e.g., remote sensing). Internet mailing lists ---------------------- To get on the PSCS mailing list, send a request to pscs@umich.edu with name, department, and status (student, faculty, etc). ga-list@umich.edu is a local to UM list. Announcements of EC news, both local and global. Send mail to streak@umich.edu to be added. ga-list: the main GA list. subscribe to ga-list-request@aic.nrl.navy.mil genetic-programming: the main gp list subscribe to genetic-programming-request@cs.stanford.edu gann: GA's and neural nets subscribe to gann-request@cs.iastate.edu ga-molecule: EC and molecular biology. subscribe to ga-molecule-request@interval.com emss: EC and economics and social science. subscribe emss to listproc@gmu.edu Newsgroups ---------- comp.ai.genetic comp.ai.alife alife.bbs.ga WWW Sites --------- Each of these have lots of pointers to other places of interest. http://www.pscs.umich.edu CSCS home page. FAQ: ---- There is a good FAQ at the ENCORE archives mentioned just above. This FAQ has a very good, mostly up-to-date summary of software available, both free and commercial. This is the place to start if you want to find what software is available. Much of the software is also available at the ENCORE sites.
